72 Tractor Hydraulic Repair Continued
The last post was about the 3-point lift not working on my 72 Ford tractor and rebuilding the 3-point top lid lift assembly. The hydraulic engine mounted was remover and a rebuild parts kit ordered. Below are all the used parts from the pump.
The new parts arrived a week later with new wobble shaft, seal, gears, bearings, bearing race, gaskets and miscellaneous springs, ball bearings, roller bearings and brackets.I was anxious to put the pump back together and forgot to take pictures of the reassembly. The most difficult was the removal of the needle bearing, seal and race that is in the same housing that the drive gears are located. It's an importuned part as it is where the wobble shaft is supported and the seal that prevents the engine oil from entering the hydraulic oil. The driver tool that was ordered with the parts fit the caged roller bearing that was supposed to drive the bearing, seal and race out of the housing. The caged bearing & seal were driven out in pieces, but the race did not move. The race had to be cut in two places with a Dremel cutting wheel to get it out without damaging the housing.
The rest of the assembly was pretty straight forward by watching the rebuild video for the pump & top lid at farmtractorrepair.com also named J&D Productions. They are also where I ordered all the parts necessary to rebuild the top cover and pump. The pump was cleaned then painted before installation.
After the pump was installed, the hydraulic system was primed using air pressure in the rearend housing to force the oil up to the pump. With the system primed and the tractor running I tried the to lift the scraper box with the 3-point and it failed, however the 2 hydraulic cylinders at the back did work so I knew that the pump was working. When I operated the raise/lower control it felt as though it was disconnected to the internal linkage in the rear housing. So, I took the top lid apart again. The lift piston assembly has been removed, and you can see the linkage that is connected to the lift control. I could not find anything wrong with the linkage.
The lift piston housing has raise/lower control valve at the bottom of the unit held in place by 2 bolts and a spring & cup on the end of the shaft, it was stuck and would not move. I had neglected to take this apart the last time I had it apart. This step is covered in the video mentioned above. I ordered a new gasket set from www.farmtractorrepair.com, then try again to get this project done.
The control linkage with the top one being the raise/lower and the large one being the piston raise/lower main lift linkage that connects to the 2 lift arms.
