68 Mustang #6 Power Steering & Brakes
I got quite a bit done since the last post, so I'll start with that.
The cowl was stripped of the heavy primer and the 3 other coats of paint using Strip It Discs on the angle grinder to bare metal (below) then reprimed using a raddle can (above). The rear end has been put back together with new seals and gaskets. While buying new gaskets I found that it is a 8" not 9" as originally assumed.
The disc brakes that came with the rear end was bolted on. There was some missing hardware that I found in my left-over stash of nuts, bolts & hardware.
There were no instructions, so I went online with the part number stamped on the bracket and found it is a Summit Racing rear disc brake kit for 8- or 9-inch Fords.
The car will be lowered and debated with myself weather to go 2 o3 inches and decided to start with 3"
Lowering blocks will be used in the back so i made my own using scrap material .
Using the 3" rectangle tubing and 1/8" plate I welded up the lowering blocks with a hole in the spring side and a pin in the rear end side.
I had 4 long left over u bolts, from a previous project, that were bead blasted then everything was painted.Using the 3" rectangle tubing and 1/8" plate I welded up the lowering blocks with a hole in the spring side and a pin in the rear end side.
below is the Borgeson Power Steering kit from C J Pony Parts that includes a new power steering box, pump, hoses and hardware.
The power front disc brake kit from C J pony Parts has disc brakes, brake booster, master cylinder, new brake lines, hardware and new pedal.
The old steering box was removed and new Borgeson box put in place then the steering linkage reinstalled.
Steering column had to be removed then shortened and the frame had to be notched for the new box. With the steering column removed I scuffed the dash and painted the areas that are not covered up with panels or gauges. The clutch and brake pedals had to be removed again as the old brake pedal had the wrong pivot point and had to be changed to the new pedal that come with the kit.
The new power booster was put in place.
The new brake booster required the firewall to be changed with larger holes for the booster rod, boot and studs. The old drum/drum proportioning valve must be ordered & changed to a disc/disc valve and brake lines altered.
New power disc brake pedal and column reinstalled that required the clutch/brake pedals mount bracket to be altered.
.
While I was under the dash the heater and defrost hoses were installed.
The Painless Wiring kit, that came with the car, was laid out and installed through the dash, engine compartment and rear of the car.
New ball joints & bushings were ordered then the upper & lower arms, struts, spindles and steering linkage reinstalled.
Coil overs that came with the car did not fit the upper mounting holes that had to be redrilled then installed.
Front suspension is now complete including the sway bar. Now I have to figure out how to setup and adjust the alignment.
With all that done the new disc brakes were installed with the new rotors, calipers, wheel bearings and wheel seals.
